8 Healthy Restaurant Suggestions for Take-out in Hong Kong
As the third wave hits Hong Kong and restaurant dining continues to be unpredictable, keep these restaurants in mind for healthy delivery and carry-out!
It’s been saddening to see the pandemic hitting some of my beloved restaurants, and as I’m back to meal planning while staying healthy at home, I have turned to take out more than usual, especially on the weekend. Indulging away on some comfort dim sum or pizza (my guilty pleasure) can be the easiest solution, but together let’s keep supporting the places we love while choosing more health-conscious restaurants.
I’ve put together a list below of little joints and eateries which I frequent- hope it inspires you to broaden your food choices during the week. Fortunately, there are a lot of good deals for delivery and self-pick up, as the F&B industry has pivoted towards some ambitious solutions to keep their businesses going.
The famed minimalist, semi-alfresco café is situated on Sai Kung Pier in Hong Kong’s ultimate summer paradise. Featuring an extensive menu full of vegan, plant-based, and vegetarian options, Little Cove’s got you covered from smoothie bowls and eggs done sunny-side up to middle eastern fused brunch dishes. The decadent, fresh dishes are large in portion and offered at an affordable price. My personal favourites- smoked salmon sprinkled in zaatar on soft sourdough bread and the blueberry smoothie. Be aware that this café is not on any delivery apps so you will have to go in person to pick up.
Newly opened, neighbourhood friendly 14 South Lane borders along HKU and offers a healthy conscious menu. Among their freshly baked goods, the predominantly plant-based café serves a few organic, vegetable forward dishes paired with freshly made juices and smoothies. Opt for their sweet brunch dishes such as their sweet potato coconut pancakes, or their wholesome salad bowls to feel energized and light during the day. They are now offering 15% off all takeaway orders.
The long-time restaurant remains one my family’s favourite when I used to vacation in Hong Kong. Spices serves some of the best Chinese and southeast Asian dishes complete with a spacious terrace that overlooks the ocean. I recommend ordering the curries which can be made vegetarian friendly, or some bites from their newly added vegan menu. Spices isn’t on any delivery apps but is quick to prepare your take-out for pick-up.
This cozy eatery continues to shine with its innovative, vibrant flavours. At Pondi, all the dishes contain fragrant herbs and delicate spices influenced by beautiful Pondicherry. With a creative, sustainable takeaway option for dinner, the kitchen will be offering luxury holiday-inspired picnic baskets for two at $650 HKD which includes a variety of small dishes containing their secret, dry-rubbed curry mix, fermented salads, and aromatic rice. The Co-Founder, Camille, recommends complementing your meal with a bottle of bubbles- choose from an eclectic selection available for purchase at the restaurant.
Kind Kitchen is known for their gourmet, health-conscious grocery store and their diner style restaurant. Serving hungry office workers in Central and Sheung Wan, the menu showcases Asian inspired dishes and uses alternative protein omni-pork. Receive half off the menu for dine-in and takeaway on dumplings, burgers, pizza, curry rice dishes, pasta, and more!
As one of the original environmental-conscious spots that have stayed in Hong Kong, MANA! has nestled into its new location in Soho and continues serving its all around, plant-based menu. The spacious location has included some new items such as their vegan cheese board and remains as a go-to for grabbing a nutritious salad during the weekdays. They can be found on delivery apps such as Food Panda and offer in-store, self pick-up. To promote their dishes, MANA! has started a takeaway freebies campaign, and you’re in the run for a prize as long as your takeaway order is above $90 HKD.
This hidden little stand sits in the heart of Soho right off the escalators. Serving some of the most delicious and decadent smoothie bowls and cones, Acai Now is the place to pick up something to cool you down in the heat while feeling good about your pick-me-up. The handcrafted designs for these bowls are beautiful. One of my favourites is the galaxy acai bowl- simply dreamy and nutritious, the bowl incorporates acai with coconut milk, butterfly pea, and protein powder, decorated with some granola and fresh fruit on the top. Acai Now can be found on Food Panda if you aren’t in the area to pick up one of their creations.
The multi-cuisine vegan and plant-based joint is known to for their hearty bowls and salads and has come up with a new menu which consists of a newly added noodle soups, pasta, and burgers which we cannot get enough of. One of my favourites is the Moving Mountains Burger, and the Med Bowl filled with fava beans, rice, hummus with sumac, handmade falafel, and broccoli. Confusion is full during lunchtime, but during the pandemic, has offered self-pick up as an option and can be found on Deliveroo.
